Trevor Noah brought a new perspective to TV satire - as well as a whole new audience

After seven years of hosting The Daily Show on Comedy Central, a hit comedy show produced in the US but with global reach, South African born comedian Trevor Noah has announced plans to leave and focus on his stand-up comedy. During his tenure as host of the political satire series, which he took over from the revered Jon Stewart, Noah has offered important takes on issues in the US – and the world.

Considering that the late-night television satire scene in the US remains populated by white men, Noah has offered unique “black” African insights into issues that affect black Americans. He has also been lucid in talking about issues that have an effect on Africa and Africans. Noah’s knowledge of Africa and African politics has helped him demonstrate that there are few differences between America, lauded as one of the greatest democracies in the world, and global south countries that Trump once called “shithole” states.

Noah’s approach attracted more African Americans than was the case during Stewart’s tenure. A 2017 study by Nielsen Media Research showed that during Stewart’s final season, 84.5% of the viewers were white. Noah lost 40% of the white viewers and gained 16% more black viewers than his predecessor.

He spoke with great clarity on issues such as the Black Lives Matter protests against racism, discrimination and racial inequity experienced by black people, the turbulent Trump presidency, the rise in white supremacy and the global COVID pandemic. By commenting on these different issues, he was able to bring home the inequalities that continue to be seen and experienced in the US.

Noah has defied the odds, offered a youthful, “black” perspective and drawn in a new audience. He will be a hard act to follow - which is what people said of his predecessor.

Noah’s particular past

Growing up and coming of age in South Africa has undoubtedly shaped Noah’s worldview. In his book Born a Crime (2016), and in his numerous stand-up comedy shows, he set out what it meant growing up in apartheid South Africa, with its white-minority rule and policies of racial segregation. Because his father was white and his mother black, he could not have a normal childhood in which he could grow up in the same home as both his parents. It was legally impossible. the Immorality Act prohibited sex between people of different races.

Noah drew on his experiences in South Africa in his role as chief anchor of The Daily Show. In particular he was able to show the striking parallels between present day America and apartheid-era South Africa. He explains this reality in one of the episodes of the show at the height of the global coronavirus pandemic:

Living in this period in America, as much as I hate to say it, a lot of the things that I’m seeing are similar to what we experienced in South Africa. Mass unemployment, a government that doesn’t seem to have the best interests of the people at heart. People who are getting angrier and angrier.

He explained in another episode of the show during the run-up to the 2016 US elections that

as an African, there’s just something familiar about Trump that makes me feel at home.

He went on to talk about striking resemblances between former US president Donald Trump and several former African presidents such as Jacob Zuma of South Africa, Idi Amin of Uganda and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe.

Comedy and political satire

I argue in a book chapter on political satire that the comic offers important ways of criticising those in power. During his tenure at The Daily Show, Noah has used comedy and satire to discuss diverse pressing contemporary issues, in the US and globally. As he has explained:

I believe in the importance of jokes. I will never lose that. I always tell people, ‘Jokes are what made me’. That’s how I see the world.

Before joining The Daily Show, Noah was an established stand-up comedian. In South Africa, he was known for satirising Jacob Zuma during his presidency for corruption and his role in state capture.

Comedy has allowed him to deal with difficult subjects in a lighthearted way. He has stated that:

I’ve loved trying to find a way to make people laugh, even when the stories are particularly s—, even on the worst days.

Noah has infused the comic into his anchoring of The Daily Show and managed to tackle controversial topics in a cheerful yet hard-hitting way.

Poking holes in American exceptionalism

Being a foreigner in the US, Noah has the necessary distance to offer sobering analyses of current affairs in that country. Through his examination of the Trump presidency and the Black Lives Matter movement, he has shown that the idea of America being “exceptional” is an illusion.

At the height of the Black Lives Matter protests in the US, he took to The Daily Show to give a grim yet poignant monologue about race in the US. Noah traced the chain of events that went beyond the killing of George Floyd, a black man who was suffocated to death on the side of a road by a group of white policemen, to show the precarity of black lives in contemporary America.

The monologue is sharp, knowledgeable and nuanced in its explanation of what was happening in the US. He grounded it on historical events to show that nothing was new. The US was not exceptional. The US democracy was as imperfect as that of the many countries that it had preached to for many years.

It has taken a late-night host from outside the US to point to the failings of the US and its democracy.

Late night TV without Noah

The late-night circuit will be different without Noah, the only black and African host of a late-night show in the US. Because of his intimate knowledge of global popular culture, he has had a youthful viewership.

His peers do not have the same perspective or viewership. If Noah replacing Stewart was seen as a daunting exercise, filling the shoes of Noah might prove to be even more challenging.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Facebook

Michael Bublé’s wife opens up about son’s cancer battle

It’s every parent’s worst nightmare for their child to be faced with a life-threatening illness, but sadly, for Michael Bublé and his wife Luisana Lopilato, that nightmare became a reality last year when their three-year-old son Noah was diagnosed with liver cancer.

A couple of months ago, the family confirmed Noah was doing “very well”, and now, in an emotional new interview on Argentinian TV, Luisana has opened up about the moment she received the heartbreaking news.

“After they did the ultrasound, they told me they found something in his belly,” she recalled. “They didn’t know what it was yet, or if it was a tumour, but that day I decided to take a flight [to the United States].”

She revealed that the couple had made a pact to meet in Los Angeles if ever they needed medical treatment, as it was halfway between her native Argentina and Bublé’s Canada.

“Without saying anything to Michael, I took the plane,” she recalled. “I took [Noah] to the hospital as soon as I arrived. We have an oncologist, a friend who does not take care of kids, but he saw him. It was all from God. I don’t know how to explain it. If we hadn’t done that ultrasound to find out if he had mononucleosis, it would have been so much worse.”

The pair both put their careers on hold to be by their son’s side during such a difficult time. “These things, when they happen to you in life, they make you realise that the most important thing isn’t what you thought it was – it’s to have faith, to be strong,” Luisana said.

“For any parent, it’s devastating to receive news like this. It was very heavy. We received all the prayers, all the calls. The only thing that got me through it was faith, from the very beginning.”

Good news for Michael Bublé's son

Michael Bublé's three-year-old son Noah, who was diagnosed with liver cancer last year, is “doing well”, according to the singer's brother-in-law.

The brother of Michael's wife Luisana Lopilato, Dario, told La Nacion, "After these very long months, Noah is doing well, very well."

"For me it's very difficult to talk about it. But I believe in God and sought comfort in Jesus Christ and a miracle from God came, from the way it was discovered, after the operation, everything."

Noah’s uncle added: "I feel it's important to carry on accompanying. That's why I stop what I'm doing here every so often and travel there."

"When you look at the big picture, and someone has a serious problem, everything else seems less important," he said. "The important thing is that we're together and we're living through this as a family."

Bublé shared the heartbreaking news that Noah had been diagnosed with cancer last November. He is understandably taking time off his work commitments to be with his family.

Related links:

Children get intelligence genes from their mothers

Sweet cartoons prove how valuable grandmothers are

15 hilarious photos show what kids do when left alone

Aussie’s full-size Noah’s Ark replica ready to set sail

Earlier this year we told you a Dutch contractor had built a full size replica of Noah’s Ark, the famous boat from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. Well, if this story is anything to go by it looks as though he’s not the only person on the lookout for two of every animal.

Kent Ham, an Australian-born religious leader in the US has created another full-size replica of Noah’s Ark, intending to open it as an attraction to visitors.

Ham left his job as a science teacher in Brisbane over three years ago, moving to the US and eventually going on to become the founder of Answers In Genesis organisation and one of the more polarising figures in America’s notorious Bible Belt.

Ham’s controversial views have somewhat overshadowed the construction of the replica, which as you can see in the video above represents quite an architectural feat.

Local atheist group Tri-State Freethinkers is reportedly planning a protest against Ham’s Ark Encounter experience as it’s set to open on Thursday.

Freethinkers’ founder and president, Jim G Helton, told News.com.au, “We’re not saying he can’t build his park. But we don’t think it’s appropriate for a family fun day.”

What’s your take on the story? Do you think it’s appropriate for Ham to open this part as a family holiday park? Noah’s ark replica set to hit the high seas

In a carpentry project of biblical proportions, a full size replica of Noah’s Ark has been built in the Netherlands and is set to hit the high seas.

The gigantic boat was built by millionaire Dutch contractor John Huibers between 2008 and 2013 and is quite an achievement, no matter what you believe in.

Mr Huibers hopes to move the massive vessel, with the help of a barge, to Brazil this summer as part of a tour that will see it travel around the world.

Mr Huibers reportedly constructed the modern-day ark replica using the same measurement employed by Noah in the Old Testament chapter.

We don’t think he’s planning to take two of every animal though!

To see the finished product, scroll through the gallery above.

Related links:

Watch this friendly cat meet 50 dogs at a dog show

The story behind Prince George’s presidential photos

Lifeguard helps make wheelchair-bound army vet's dream come true

Lures versus bait? Let’s settle the de-bait

The above heading is likely to raise some eyebrows and get a few anglers squaring off against each other as they passionately exclaim to anyone who will listen, the reason why “their” angling method is superior to the other.

The truth is, each method has its pros and cons, and selecting one type of fishing over the other on anything other than personal taste is hard to back-up with facts. But comparisons can be made between the two. I practice both, plus I fly-fish (my preferred fishing method), and enjoy them all. I bait fish far less, but that’s only because I like being more active and move about. It’s probably fair to say that in the right hands, the correct use of bait will out fish lures 10 to one every day of the week. If you’re new to fishing, giving it a go while on holidays, or fishing with the kids, then using bait is the easiest and cheapest way to catch some fish. If you’re after a feed of fresh fish then it’s definitely the most reliable method to use.

These days, there are more and more anglers participating in “sportfishing”, which involves targeting fish for the challenge and fun of it, rather than simply going out and catching a few fish to eat. Most sportfishers chase fish with lures or flies rather than using bait because the fish can be easily and harmlessly released as most lure caught fish are hooked in the mouth rather than the gut.

Having said that, these days the lines between bait and lure fishing are becoming blurred, there’s so much variety to be found in modern day lures, including many that are edible and biodegradable! Do you see where I’m coming from? In fact, some of these new “lures” are even called artificial baits! That’s right, you don’t have to put up with baiting live or dead animals onto hooks anymore, you can buy your baits, which are often shaped like small fish, frogs and other creatures in plastic bottles and packets!

Natural baits

If you’re chasing freshwater fish you’ll probably end up using live worms, yabbies, baitfish or mudeyes for bait. It’s possible to buy worms, yabbies and mudeyes from tackle shops in fishing areas. But often you have to gather these yourself. There are also artificial power baits available that come in small jars and are pliable and putty like in texture. These are very successful baits when chasing rainbow trout in lakes in particular, and are less messy and offer a great alternative to live baits that have a tendency to put off many newcomers from participating in the whole bait fishing process.

In saltwater there are both live (fresh) and dead (packaged/frozen) real baits available for fishing and chasing bread and butter fish species such as bream, mullet, flathead or whiting while on holidays or away for a weekend. This type of fishing is often the first taste of fishing for many grown-ups and children.

Many popular fishing locations have numerous outlets that sell both live and dead bait.

A basic light to medium spinning rod and reel, with monofilament line and a simple rig with a running ball sinker above a stopper, such as a swivel, above a one metre leader down to a single hook is all that is needed to catch just about any species of fresh or saltwater fish that the average angler might be interested in chasing.

Lures

Just as artificial powerbaits have made baitfishing in freshwater more “novice”, so has the use of artificial baits, or soft plastics made lure fishing less technical for novice lure anglers. As mentioned earlier, many of these soft plastic “baits” blur the line between bait and lure, many of them are scented and edible, and can actually be fished statically so fish pick them up and chew on them.

The upside of lure fishing is that it is generally a cleaner fishing method where there isn’t any necessity to collect, use or store smelly baits. A wide variety of lures can be collected and easily stored in convenient tackle boxes and carried about and used whenever required without the need to ‘buy or collect’ fresh bait before every fishing trip.

The downside of lure fishing is that it can be expensive if you start using (and collecting) intricate hard-bodied swimming lures that can be lost on snags and fish etc. Using soft plastic lures is far more economical (and just as effective) as the jig heads and the soft plastic tails are less intricate in their manufacture and therefore less expensive.

The same basic, light to medium spinning rod, reel and line outfit is perfectly suitable for lure casting (hard and soft) for most bread and butter, salt or freshwater fish species. A straight monofilament line to lure rig is perfectly adequate to get started and catch fish.

To summarise, there are no hard and fast rules as to when one method is better than the other. If you’re taking the kids on holidays to the beach, want to have fun and catch a few, then my suggestion would be to start them off using bait to chase bream and flathead etc. It’s possible to set-up a few rods, keep all the children close at hand around the water while fishing from the beach or jetties. Safety around water should be a key factor where kids are involved. As they grow, and if they show a keen interest in fishing, then getting them started using soft plastic or basic lures and chasing easily caught fish such as flathead in saltwater or redfin in fresh, can kick-start their lifetime fishing adventures.

If you’re just after a feed of fish then you can’t go past fresh bait and local fishing advice. If you’re more interested in moving about and putting the odds back in the fish’s favour, and making your fishing more challenging, and releasing more fish than you keep, then lure fishing is probably for you.

No matter what method you choose, make it enjoyable, fish responsibly, take your rubbish home with you, don’t leave discarded fishing line, hooks or plastic packaging lying around, and most importantly, limit your kill.
